[Report] MLB Will Propose A Shorter Season & Prorated Player Salaries

The 2020 MLB campaign was suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but the league and MLBPA remain committed to salvaging the season.

Several plans and proposals have been exchanged, but the two sides haven't been able to reach a resolution yet. The clock is ticking, and there's no guarantee that a 2020 season will happen.

According to ESPN's Jeff Passan, the league has talked about a plan that would feature "a shorter schedule in which it would pay members of the MLB Players Association their full prorated salaries."

Passan noted that MLB isn't planning to propose this plan. But the 50-game plan, which would commence in early July, is "a last resort in the event that parties can't come to a deal", per Passan.

Finances have been a major sticking point in talks. Several MLB teams implemented pay cuts to their minor league players. The Oakland Athletics have announced last week that minor league players will stop being paid after May 31.

ESPN's Buster Olney reported that there are some owners who are willing to not play out the 2020 season in order "to slash payroll costs and reduce losses."

MLB previously proposed a plan that the players union balked at. It called for an 82-game season that would start in July, and $200 million in postseason bonuses, but it included a major cutback in player salaries for 2020.

The 2020 MLB season was initially scheduled to take place on March 26, with all 30 teams in action. The regular season was initially scheduled to conclude on Sept. 27, with the playoffs beginning two days later. Game 7 of the 2020 World Series, if necessary, would have taken place on Oct. 28.

Last week, the NHL announced its return to play plan that includes a 24-team postseason format. However, there is no guarantee that the season will resume, and commissioner Gary Bettman wouldn't offer any timelines on continuing the season.

It was reported last week that the NBA is targeting July 31 as a return to play date, and the majority of teams have reopened their practice facilities.
