Ricky Gervais Confirms The Third Season Of After Life Will Be Its Last
Ricky Gervais has revealed that even though there will be a third season of After Life, it will be the show's last.
Trying to end a show at the perfect time is harder than it seems. The trick is to obviously try and go out on top. When the show is at the peak of its popularity. On the other hand, it must be very difficult not to only identify when that is, but also to walk away when life for the show has never been better.
More often than not, showrunners go beyond that point, and a series will end when it's on a downward slope. At that point, some will even run until the wheels fall off, almost making the show's fans forget about the good old days. When it comes to creators who have a knack of getting it right every time in terms of stopping while the getting is good, no one does it quite as well as Ricky Gervais.
Gervais has had a simple formula in place ever since he created The Office. No more than two seasons, and very short seasons at that since his shows are British. The Office, Extras, and Derek all ended after just two seasons each, and all of them are fondly remembered by their fans years after they came to an end. However, Gervais has confirmed that for the first time ever, he is going to break his formula.
After Life will return for a third season. That's the good news. The bad news is Gervais confirmed during a recent Q&A that he will not continue to buck the trend. Season three of After Life will be the show's last. Gervais even joked that he would be more than happy to have a meteor hit the town of Tambury, where After Life is set, if that's what it takes to stop people asking for a fourth season.
After Life follows the life and times of Tony, played by Gervais, following the death of his wife. Plus, and spoilers ahead for anyone who is yet to watch season two, the death of his father which happens at the end of the latest season. Tony appears to be back to his suicidal ways after having more tragedy dumped on him until the new woman in his life shows up at his front door. Fingers crossed there's a happy ending for Tony in the third and final season.
