Fortnite Has Been Removed From Apple And Google's App Stores

The war between Epic and Apple, and now Google too, is getting ugly as Fortnite has now been removed from both app stores.

It's no secret that Epic does not agree with the 30% cut app stores take from developers for hosting their games and their apps. It's one of the reasons it took Fortnite so long to be made available via the Google Play store. Prior to that, Android owners who wanted to play Fortnite on their devices had to download the game directly from Epic. A little convoluted and perhaps even offputting for some.

Unfortunately for Epic, that wasn't an option when it came to teaming up with Apple. The developer reluctantly allowed users of Apple devices to download and play Fortnite, handing over 30% of its profits to Apple in the process. However, the developer has now decided that enough is enough.

This week, Epic announced that Fortnite players using Apple devices could now buy V-Bucks directly from them instead of the Apple store. As if that wouldn't have infuriated Apple enough, since it means it wouldn't be getting its 30% cut, Epic also reduced the cost of 1000 V-Bucks from $9.99 to $7.99. Only when bought through the Epic store though, of course, to encourage players to bypass Apple and head straight to the source.

Apple did not take long to react, removing Fortnite from its app store. Players who already have the app installed will be unaffected, but anyone who doesn't is now out of luck, at least until the game returns, if ever. To make matters worse for Epic, Google has followed suit. Fortnite is now no longer available via the Google Play Store, which means we are back to Android users having to head directly to Epic for their Fortnite fix.

The hits have been going back and forth so quickly that it feels as if all parties involved have been expecting this to come to a head for a while. Shortly after Fortnite was removed from Apple's app store, Epic filed a lawsuit against the corporation. It also released a video comparing Apple's actions to the plot of George Orwell's 1984. In the clip, Apple takes the form of a man with an Apple for a head. Nice touch.
