David Blaine Is Back And Plans To Float To New York Via A Bunch Of Helium Balloons
David Blaine is returning to perform his first major public stunt in over a decade, and it might be his craziest one ever.
2020 has been a pretty wild and eventful year so far. Three months in, the world was gripped by a global pandemic which has forced most of us to stay indoors ever since. Protests have been taking place worldwide as a part of the Black Lives Matter movement which will hopefully bring about positive change. And what happened to those murder hornets?
Just when you thought 2020 couldn't get any wilder, David Blaine has stepped back into the spotlight. For those unfamiliar with Blaine's work, which is possible since he hasn't done anything major for more than a decade, let us try to explain. Blaine is a magician/illusionist of sorts. He achieved worldwide fame by performing dangerous, and often downright bizarre stunts.
Those stunts included living in a glass box suspended above London for 44 days with nothing more than water to survive one, and being buried alive for an entire week. We did warn you that they were a little strange. Well, prepare for more. Blaine is back and at the end of this month, he plans on floating from New Jersey to New York using nothing more than a bunch of helium-filled balloons.
The stunt has been appropriately named Ascension and the whole thing will stream live on YouTube on August 31, 2020. The trailer for the event can be seen above. Blaine claims that the trick has been ten years in the making and that it has been a dream of his since he was a child. Apparently, the stunt will take hours to complete, and will require Blaine to float high over the Hudson River.
Photos teasing the event suggest that Blaine has tested what it will take to lift him off the ground and whether he is capable of performing the stunt. We certainly hope he has had a test run or two. The image shows Blaine suspended above the ground by a number of large, colorful balloons. It isn't a house with an old man and a boy scout inside, but this might be the closest any of us get to Pixar's Up! coming to life.
