Imax Made $300,000 From ‘Kanye West: Donda Experience’ Sales, Almost Sold Out
Movie theatres across the world have been struggling since the onset of the coronavirus pandemic. But IMAX appears to be making an impressive comeback, especially after the success Kanye West: Donda Experience.
Even though fans were only given 48-hours notice to buy tuckets before the event, it sold out in 47 of 60 IMAX theatres in North America, Deadline reports. In total, the company made $313,583 from ticket sales for the event.
IMAX’s CEEO Rich Gelfold has since said the company is aiming to have 200 screens up and running by the end of this year for future live events, like Kanye’s listening party. As of now, they only have 79 capable of support live streams.
Kanye held his performance at LoanDepot Park in Miami, Florida, which was subsequently streamed across the country. The concert is a precursor to his new album Donda 2, and it shared many similarities to the listening party he held for Donda in Chicago last year. Both albums are named after his mother.
The concert was a star-studded event, with artists such as Pusha T, Migos, Marilyn Manson and Alicia Keys making appearances on stage.
NME reports that fans tuning into the livestreamed waited for 2 hours and 45 minutes for the event to the properly begin. Afterwards, Kanye proceeded to perform for 45 minutes, which included a variety of unreleased tracks.
One of the most notable moments from the show includes when Kanye used a sample of his estranged wife Kim Kardashian’s monologue from a Saturday Night Live appearance. This included lines where she referred to Kanye as the “best rapper of all time” and the “richest Black man in America.”
Kim is currently dating SNL star Pete Davidson, which Kanye has been vocally against on social media, going so far as to encourage his fans to harass Pete online and in public.
Aside from his highly publicized divorce, Kanye has been making headlines for controversial decisions around the release of Donda 2. Earlier this month, the rapper revealed the album would only be available on the Stem Player, thus boycotting popular streaming services like Apple Music and Spotify.
In an Instagram post, Kanye (who legally changed his name to “Ye” recently) expressed frustration over how little of the profits artists get when putting their music on streaming platforms.
“Today artists get just 12% of the money the industry makes,” Kanye explained in the post. "It's time to free music from this oppressive system. Its time take control and build your own,” Kanye wrote in the post.
Kanye later revealed he made over $2.22 million from Stem Player sales in the first 24-hours after his announcement.
Nevertheless, there’s been uproar from his fan base following the decision, as many people are unhappy at the thought of spending $200 on a new device just to listen to a single album. As it stands, however, Kanye appears firm in his decision to not put Donda 2 on any streaming platforms but his own.
