Justin Bieber Sued For Copyright Infringement Over 2019 Collaboration

Justin Bieber is the latest musician to be hit with a plagiarism lawsuit. On Thursday, a lawsuit was filed against Justin and country duo Dan + Shay for their 2019 song “10,000 Hours.”

According to PEOPLE Magazine, International Manufacturing Concepts, Melomega Music, and Sound Gems named Justin, Dan Smyers, Shay Mooney, and others in the lawsuit. Court documents reveal the plaintiffs argue “10,000 Hours” is heavily based on the 1973 song “The First Time Baby Is A Holiday,” written by Frank Fioravanti and Palmer Rakes.

Although “The First Time Baby Is A Holiday” was written in the 1970s, it wasn’t released until 2014. Justin and Dan + Shay’s collaboration came out in 2019.

The plaintiffs own rights to the original song and therefore want credit on the later-released collaboration. Not only does this include a cut in sales profits, but they also want money for damages and legal fees. An exact number hasn’t been released.

Additionally, the companies want an injunction to prevent “10,000 Hours” from being further distributed for profit.

“10,000 Hours” debuted at number four on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. It’s also the most streamed non-holiday country song.

Dan + Shay went on to win a 2021 Grammy Award for the single, while Justin earned 2 American Music Awards, a Billboard Award, and an iHeartRadio Award the previous year, also for the collaboration.

Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time Justin has been sued over copyright infringement. He faced a similar case in 2016 when he and Skrillex were accused of plagiarizing their hit “Sorry” by singer Casey Daniel aka White Hinterland. Daniel argued the song was too similar to her 2014 hit “Ring the Bell.”

However, TMZ later reported that Daniel filed to dismiss the case. It’s unclear what spurred the decision.

Copyright infringement lawsuits have become increasingly popular in the music industry. Last month, we reported that a $42 million lawsuit against Taylor Swift for her song “Shake it Off” was dismissed again.

The singer has been named in a lawsuit by R&B artist Jesse Grahamfour times , though the last time the case was dismissed without prejudice so he can’t re-file.

However, Taylor’s legal battles aren’t over yet. She’s also being sued by songwriters Sean Hall and Nathan Butler, who argue she stole key elements from their 2001 song “Playas Gonna Play” for “Shake it Off.” While their original case was dismissed, they’ve since appealed the decision and it remains ongoing.
