Tesla On Autopilot Smashes Into $3.5 Million Jet | TheRichest.com

Based on a viral video first posted to Reddit, someone used a Tesla’s autopilot feature to “summon” their car—but it rolled across the tarmac and smashed into a very expensive plane instead.

In the video, originally posted to Reddit, a Tesla Model Y slowly rolls toward a 1.5-ton Cirrus Vision Jet. The Tessie then cuffs the back of the plane, dragging the $3.5 million plane in a near-complete circle before stopping.

The user posted the video to an aviation enthusiast community, claiming to have witnessed the accident at an event hosted by aircraft manufacturer Cirrus. After the owner “summoned” his car, it treaded around several expensive aircraft before smashing into the most expensive one.

In another post of the video to a Tesla community, they noted: “I also drive a Tesla Model Y - but was not the poor soul (with poor decision-making abilities) who summoned his Tesla around several expensive aircraft - only to crash it into the most expensive one ($3,500,000)!”

The Tesla Model Y has a feature called “Smart Summon” that, if activated, summons the car to its owner’s location. The feature works something like an automatic valet, with the car operating completely autonomously until it arrives in front of its owner.

Tesla says autopilot driving is 10x safer than the average driver. In their latest vehicle safety report, they recorded one crash for every 4.31 million miles driven with the feature enabled. They reported one crash for every 1.59 million miles driven with the autopilot off. The national average is one crash per 484,000 miles.

Police blame a failure of the autopilot feature for the death of two men in Texas last year.  After failing to navigate a turn, the Tesla ran off-road and struck a tree. Neither man was behind the wheel.

Earlier this month, Tesla's billionaire CEO Elon Musk made aggressive moves toward acquiring Twitter. If he's successful, it will be the fifth company under his leadership, alongside SpaceX, Neuralink, and The Boring Company.

Musk may be the world's richest man, says he sleeps on his friend's couches after making good on a promise to sell all of his mansions last year.
