Grimes Is Auctioning Off Her MET Gala Outfit To Support Ukraine

Grimes is joining other famous faces to raise money to support Ukraine through a luxury auction that will be selling a variety of notable things, including the singer’s 2021 MET Gala look.

According to NME, 50 celebrities have donated personal items to the Resistance For Ukraine benefit auction, which describes its goal as providing “support [to] Emergency Response & BIPOC families (Black, indigenous, and people of colour) in and out of Ukraine.”

All proceeds raised from the auction will go towards Diaspora Relief and Razom, both of which are supporting relief efforts amid Russia’s invasion.

Grimes made waves at the 2021 MET Gala when she wore a silver, see-through ensemble complete with a matching sword and face mask, designed by CHRISHABANA x Dune Harkonnen Mask.

The Canadian-born singer posted a series of images of the ethereal look to promote the auction.

“Hey guys – I’m auctioning stuff from my Met Gala look last year to raise money to help get BIPOC families out of Ukraine since they’re having trouble exiting at the border,” she captioned the post.

She also quoted the auction’s press release. “Each piece offers a unique interpretation of the theme ‘resistance,’” it describes of the auction’s theme.

“The work will simultaneously be auctioned online via the Artsy exchange,” the description continued. “All proceeds will go to Diaspora Relief and Razom, which will use the funds to provide food, shelter, and evacuation support to those in need.”

Grimes – who shares two children with Elon Musk – is certainly not the first celebrity to use their star power to raise funds for Ukraine.

In March, Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis launched a campaign via GoFundMe to raise $30 million. The couple said they’d match up to $3 million in donations.

“I came to America in 1991. I have always considered myself an American, a proud American,” Mila, who immigrated from the Ukraine in childhood, said in a clip explaining their motivation. “I love everything that this country has done for myself and my family. But today I have never been more proud to be a Ukrainian.”

The GoFundMe campaign is still live, and to date has raised over $36 million, surpassing its goal.

Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds teamed up with USA for United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees to support Ukrainian relief efforts. They similarly promised on social media to match up to $1 million in donations made to UNCHR.
