Travis Scott Donates A Million To Help Black Students Graduate

Travis Scott is still dealing with the aftermath of the fatal Astroworld festival, but he’s putting his star power to good use. The rapper recently pledged $1 million to establish a scholarship fund aimed at helping Black students graduate.

According to TMZ, the seven-figure dollar donation is going to be split between 100 students – $10,000 each – at historically black colleges and universities who are on track to graduate this year.

The students came from 38 HBCUS, including “Alabama A&M University, Central State University, Jackson State University, Morehouse College, Texas Southern University, Grambling State University, Xavier University of Louisiana, and Prairie View A&M University.”

The scholarships will be distributed through Scott’s Waymon Webster Scholarship Fund, which he founded on behalf of his grandfather.

My grandfather wanted me to take it all the way through college,” he previously explained of the scholarship. “I feel there is a power in education, so to be able to give someone the opportunity to fulfil that dream as my papa thought for me is amazing.”

The stipulations of the scholarship are outlined on Scott’s Cactus Jack Foundation website. “This scholarship provides financial support to students and families towards final tuition fees, in order for as many students as possible to graduate and receive their college diploma,” it explains.

To be eligible, students must graduate with an average GPA of 3.5 or higher and they may be facing financial challenges in their final semester.

Travis has been ramping up his charitable initiatives in the wake of November 2021’s Astroworld festival that left 10 people dead and hundreds injured.

Travis and the festival’s organizers are facing multiple lawsuits over the tragic event. It’s been argued that the organizers failed to take proper safety measure and that Travis encouraged the crowd surge. Reports have said that the lawsuits may total over $10 billion combined.

Most recently, a wrongful death suit was filed against Travis after a female fan, Shanazia Williamson, said the injuries she sustained at Astroworld caused her miscarriage.

“[There was a] failure to plan, design, manage, operate, staff, and supervise the event was a direct and proximate cause of Shanazia's injuries and death of her and Jarawd's (her partner) unborn child,” court documents argue.

Despite his ongoing legal troubles, Travis has already returned to the stage. After a series of private performances, including one at a Coachella afteparty, Travis gave his first public set at Miami’s E11EVEN Club earlier this month. He played to a sold-out audience.
