Amber Will Have To Pay WAY MORE To Johnny If She Appeals Verdict

Amber Heard has already said she plans to appeal the verdict in Johnny Depp’s defamation case against her. However, it’s going to be a financial risk for the actress, as she’ll have to pay way more in damages to her ex-husband should the appeal not turn out in her favor.

Last month, a jury ruled in the Pirates of the Caribbean star’s favor. He originally sued Amber in 2018 for an op-ed she wrote in The Washington Post in which she described surviving domestic abuse.

Johnny was awarded $10 million in compensatory damages and $5 million in punitive damages. Due to a Virginia rule capping punitive damages, Amber will only have to pay $10.35 million. She was also awarded $2 million in compensatory damages over defamatory remarks Johnny’s lawyer said about her.

However, when asked if her client could afford the million-dollar verdict, Amber’s lawyer Elaine Bredehoft replied, “Oh no, absolutely not.”

The attorney added, “One of the first things that she said is, ‘I am so sorry to all those women out there; this is a setback for all women in and outside of the courtroom." Amber’s legal team has confirmed they’ll appeal the decision.

However, it’s going to cost Amber. According to TMZ, when a judge entered the verdict into the court’s records earlier this week, she included a stipulation should Amber appeal.

Specifically, Amber will have to “post a bond in the full amount of Johnny's judgment PLUS 6% -- that's an additional $621k. Presumably, the 6% is an interest penalty for a delay in collection.”

A representative for Amber has already responded to the judge’s stipulation to confirm (again) they’re moving forward with the appeal. "As stated in yesterday's congressional hearings, you don't ask for a pardon if you are innocent. And, you don't decline to appeal if you know you are right,” the rep stated.

For the most part, Amber has been keeping a low profile since the conclusion of the high-profile case. She was spotted shopping at a New York TJ Maxx with her sister before scurrying away from cameras. Reports have also said she’s negotiating a million-dollar tell-all book deal.

Earlier this month, a GoFundMe campaign popped up claiming to help the actress pay damages to her ex-husband. However, the fundraiser (which was titled “Justice for Amber Heard”) was later removed, with GoFundMe saying it was illegitimate.

It looks like Amber is on her own to pay the million-dollar settlement and any extra fees associated with the appeal.
