Lizzo Gifts Planned Parenthood $1M After Roe V. Wade Overturned
Many people in America are shocked with the supreme court’s decision to overturn Roe vs. Wade, a landmark case that determined access to safe abortions is a constitutional right. There’s been plenty of uproar over the decision, even in the celebrity world, and Lizzo is making waves thanks to her generous donation to Planned Parenthood.
According to Billboard, Lizzo has pledged to donate $500,000 of her own money to Planned Parenthood and National Network of Abortion Funds (NNAF). The funds will come directly from profits made from her upcoming fall tour Special.
Moreover, Live Nation has promised to match the singer’s donation with $500,000 of their own.
“I’m pledging $500k from my upcoming tour to Planned Parenthood. Live Nation agreed to match— to make it 1 MILLION dollars,” Lizzo announced via her official Twitter account.
The songstress continued, “The most important thing is action & loud voices. @PPFA @AbortionFunds & organizations like them— will need funding to continue offering services to people who are most harmed by this ban.”
Lizzo also shared a link to her 3rd annual Juneteenth Giveback, which gives her fans a chance to enter a raffle to win a series of prizes while supporting a variety of black organizations.
The musician explained that by supporting her campaign, her followers can directly support access to reproductive rights for women of color.
“Black women & women of color have historically had disproportionately less access to family planning resources— this is a great loss but not a new one,” she explained. Lizzo added, “Go to https://ift.tt/izj3bQs to donate, sign the Bans Off My Body petition and sign up to volunteer and take action.”
Some of the prizes include a chance to see Lizzo in concert complete with a hotel stay.
This isn’t the first time Lizzo has been vocal about women’s reproductive rights. In March, she referred to Texas’ abortion and transgender policies as a “violation of human rights.” Lizzo herself hails from Houston, Texas.
"I'm proud to rep Houston. But I'm not proud to rep Texan politics right now. There are very regressive laws being passed,” Lizzo said at the time. "They're taking away the right for young children to have a chance to live authentically as themselves," she continued. "It's a violation of human rights. Trans rights are human rights."
Lizzo’s words came after it was announced Texas is banning abortions after six weeks and that parents of transgender kids will be investigated.
