Director Matt Reeves Unveils First Trailer For The Batman

On Saturday, writer-director Matt Reeves unveiled the first trailer for The Batman during the final panel for the DC FanDome event. The teaser, which is set to Nirvana’s “Something in the Way,” showcases the Riddler (Paul Dano), who is dropping deadly clues for the Batman (Robert Pattison) and Commissioner Gordon (Jeffery Wright).

It also shows a few shots of Catwoman (Zoë Kravitz), as well as, a first look at the Batsuit and the Batmobile. The film, which resembles Christopher Nolan’s films in its darkness, highlights Batman’s tough on crime approach as he beats a street thug to a pulp.

In the DC FanDome panel, Reeves said The Batman isn’t an origin story but begins in the second year of Batman’s emergence in Gotham as he battles Catwoman, the Riddler, and the Penguin (Colin Farrell). Batman’s story explores the city’s corruption and its possible connection to the Wayne family.

Reeves has been sporadically teasing glimpses of the film. After showing Pattinson wearing the Batsuit, he posted a video and photos of the Batcycle and a fuller look at the Batsuit. In March, fans got their first look at the Batmobile.

The film, which had to suspend production due to the COVID-19 pandemic, will begin filming again in early September. Reeves said he has completed 25% of the film, and the official release date is set for next summer or fall. The movie also stars John Turturro, Peter Sarsgaard, Jayme Lawson and Andy Serkis.

Reeves is also working with Terence Winter, executive producer of The Sopranos and Boardwalk Empire on a spin-off Gotham PD, which takes place a year before The Batman. According to Reeves, the TV series will focus on a corrupt cop when Batman first appears in Gotham City. HBO Max has already greenlit the show.

The Batman panel was part of a series of DC FanDome virtual events, mostly focused on Warner Bros. forthcoming films based on DC Comics properties. A follow-up event focused on TV series is set for September 12.
